Grammar focus · Section 2
8–10 minPast Continuous vs Past Simple
Past Continuous (was/were + -ing) describes the BACKGROUND — a longer action in progress in the past.
→ I was walking home when it started to rain.
→ While she was studying, her phone rang.
→ We were watching TV when the power cut out.
→ I was reading while my brother was playing games.
More detail
Past Simple describes the ACTION that happened — usually short and finished. They meet with 'when' or 'while': 'I was reading WHEN the lights went out.' Use 'while' for the longer action: 'WHILE I was reading, the lights went out.' Two parallel backgrounds use Past Continuous twice: 'I was cooking while he was working.'

Pronunciation · Section 4
3–4 minWeak 'was' /wəz/ and 'were' /wə/ in past continuous
- • I was WORKing late. (was → /wəz/)
- • We were WAITing for hours.
- • She was RUNning when she FELL.
- • They were LAUGHing the whole time.
How to say it
'Was' and 'were' are almost always weak in past continuous: /wəz/ and /wə/. Stress falls on the -ing verb. 'I was COOKing' — not 'I WAS cooking'. Stressing the auxiliary sounds robotic or emphatic.
Reading · Section 5
8–10 minThe day I missed my flight
I was sleeping deeply when my alarm finally woke me — three hours late. I jumped out of bed, threw clothes in a bag and ran. While I was running for the train, I bumped into a tourist asking for directions. I tried to help, but my flight was leaving in 90 minutes. On the train, I was checking my phone every minute when, all of a sudden, the train stopped between stations. We sat there for 20 minutes. By the time I reached the airport, the gate was closing. The staff were already walking away. Out of nowhere, a kind agent waved me through — I was the last person on the plane.
Question 1.Why was the writer late?
Question 2.What happened on the train?
Question 3.How did the story end?
Q1.The writer woke up on time.
Q2.A tourist asked for directions on the train.
Q3.The writer was the last passenger to board.

5 minCambridge PET — Writing Part 2 (story)
Task
Write a 100-word story beginning: 'I was walking home when, suddenly,…'
Strategy
Open with Past Continuous to paint the background. Use Past Simple for the key action that interrupts. Add one 'while' clause and one time linker (when, suddenly, all of a sudden). Close with a feeling sentence — examiners reward emotion + tense control.
Example
I was walking home when, suddenly, the sky turned dark. While I was looking up, it started to pour. I was running for shelter when I bumped into a neighbour with an umbrella. We laughed and walked together. I felt lucky.
Practice · Section 8

Question 2.While she ____ to music, the doorbell rang.
Question 3.We ____ dinner when our friends arrived.

Your task
Write a 100–120 word story called 'The strangest moment of my week'. Use Past Continuous for background, Past Simple for the key action, at least one 'while' clause, and 2 vocab phrases from today.
Show model answer
I was working from home on Tuesday when, all of a sudden, the fire alarm went off. I was in the middle of a video call, so I froze for a second. While I was grabbing my keys, my neighbour knocked — she was holding her cat and laughing. Out of nowhere, the alarm just stopped. We stood there confused for a minute. Later, I bumped into the building manager, who said it was a test. Nobody had warned us. I went back upstairs feeling slightly silly but very awake.
